About this wine

Jim Clendenen’s Au Bon Climat has long been a benchmark for restrained, Burgundy-inspired Chardonnay in California, and the Bien Nacido Vineyard bottling is one of its flagships. The 2021 offers ripe citrus, yellow apple and pear with hints of toasted nuts, wet stone and subtle spice, combining intensity with real tension. The palate is concentrated but not heavy, with tangy acidity, layered fruit and a long, mineral-driven finish that promises excellent development in bottle.

Tasting Note

Recent reviews describe the 2021 Bien Nacido Chardonnay as tightly wound yet already complex, showing lemon oil, stone fruit and flint on the nose and a palate that is focused, chalky and long, with integrated oak and great ageing potential.

In the glass

Medium lemon with a slight golden hue.

In the nose

Lemon zest, pear and white peach with toasted almond, struck flint and brioche.

On the palate

Taut and layered, with citrus and stone fruit, lively acidity and a long, stony, savoury finish.

Au bon climat

Au Bon Climat, founded by Jim Clendenen, is a pioneer of Burgundy-inspired Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from California’s Central Coast. The style favours moderate ripeness, freshness and complexity over blockbuster power, with careful oak and long aging. These are classically shaped, food-friendly wines that age beautifully.
