About this wine

III Lustros is one of Gramona’s historic cuvées, a traditional-method sparkling wine made predominantly from old-vine Xarel·lo with a smaller share of Macabeu, farmed organically and biodynamically in Penedès. The base wine is partially fermented in barrel, then undergoes second fermentation in bottle and an exceptionally long ageing period on its lees – often over 80 months – before disgorgement. The result is a complex, gastronomic sparkling with layered aromas of baked apple, citrus peel, toasted nuts, smoke and pastry over a deeply mineral core. It occupies a stylistic space similar to mature prestige cuvée Champagne but with a Mediterranean accent.

Tasting Note

Reviews from The Wine Advocate describe the 2016 as rich yet vibrant, with notes of lemon curd, baked orchard fruit, toasted almond and brioche, framed by very fine bubbles and a salty, almost chalky finish.

In the glass

Deep straw with golden highlights and a very fine, persistent mousse.

In the nose

Baked apple, lemon curd, toasted hazelnut, smoke, brioche and a hint of fennel and wet stone.

On the palate

Broad and creamy yet bright, with ripe citrus and orchard fruit, savoury pastry and nut tones, vibrant acidity and a long, saline, mouth-coating finish.

Gramona

Gramona is a reference house for long-aged traditional-method sparkling wines from Penedès. Organic and biodynamic vineyards, very long lees aging and low dosage give textured, complex bubbles that can rival serious Champagne. Their style is gastronomic and refined, with balance between ripe Mediterranean fruit and chalky, savoury depth.
