About this wine

Scharzhofberger Spätlese is one of the reference points for ageworthy, low-alcohol, naturally sweet Riesling. The 2005 vintage is now in a beautiful early-mature phase, showing apricot, peach, citrus oil and floral notes, layered with honey, spice and wet slate. At around 7–8% alcohol, it’s intensely flavoured yet weightless, with high acidity balancing the sweetness and giving a very long, refined finish.

Tasting Note

Major reviews describe 2005 as aromatic and elegant, with ripe apricot and pear, nuances of nutmeg and brown spice, a delicate yet concentrated palate showing cooked and caramelised stone fruit, and a sweet, generous but finely balanced finish driven by acidity and mineral notes.

In the glass

Bright lemon-gold with green reflections.

In the nose

Apricot, peach and citrus zest with honey, white flowers and a marked slatey, smoky mineral note.

On the palate

Sweet yet feather-light, with juicy stone fruit, honey and spice, mouth-watering acidity and a long, finely etched, mineral finish.

Egon Müller

Egon Müller’s Scharzhof estate is a legend of German Riesling, with Scharzhofberger among the world’s most revered white-wine vineyards. The focus is almost exclusively on Prädikat Rieslings, from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, all characterised by feather-light texture, piercing acidity and haunting aromatics. These wines age effortlessly for decades and are benchmarks for finesse, precision and complexity.
