About this wine

Pepe’s Trebbiano is hand-harvested, foot-trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete, with no temperature control and no new oak. The 2022 shows citrus peel, green apple and yellow plum, with wild herbs, fennel, honeycomb and a distinct earthy, chalky minerality. The palate is concentrated and structured, with chewy texture, firm acidity and a long, salty finish; like most Pepe whites it benefits from air or a few years in the cellar.

Tasting Note

Critics describe recent vintages as showing lemon oil, apple, chamomile and herbs, a dense, waxy texture, high acidity and a savoury, saline close, with strong ageing potential.

In the glass

Deep straw, often slightly hazy.

In the nose

Lemon zest, yellow apple and plum with chamomile, fennel, honeycomb and a chalky, earthy note.

On the palate

Structured and textural, with concentrated citrus and stone fruit, firm acidity, subtle oxidative notes and a long, salty, savoury finish.

Emidio Pepe

Emidio Pepe is an icon of Abruzzo and a pioneer of artisanal, low-intervention winemaking long before it became fashionable. Trebbiano and Montepulciano are farmed biodynamically, harvested by hand, crushed by foot and aged in concrete, with no filtration and minimal manipulation. The wines are intensely characterful, built to age for decades, and often show an almost timeless combination of depth, energy and savoury complexity.
