About this wine

Seyssuel occupies steep schist slopes just north of Côte-Rôtie and has become one of the most exciting revived terroirs of the Northern Rhône. Julien Merlin’s Le Schiste isolates this geological character in a pure Syrah, using restrained oak élevage to retain the direct imprint of the site. Black fruit, pepper, spice and light licorice are underscored by a distinctly mineral quality, while the palate combines power with freshness rather than simple ripeness. The result is a focused, ageworthy Syrah that clearly reflects its stony northern origin.

Tasting Note

Critics describe black fruit, spice and gentle licorice, with a finely balanced palate that is fresh and powerful and carries a characteristic schist-derived mineral tension.

In the glass

Deep purple-ruby.

In the nose

Blackberry, cassis, violet, black pepper, licorice and crushed-stone notes.

On the palate

Concentrated and mineral, with dark fruit, spice, fresh acidity and a long, tensioned finish.

Julien Merlin

A rising independent winemaker based in the Northern Rhône, Julien Merlin established his domaine after gaining experience with Julien Pilon and working in New Zealand. His small-production Condrieu, Saint-Joseph and regional wines emphasise purity, balance and precise expressions of their terroir.
