About this wine

Siccagno comes from organically farmed Nero d’Avola vines averaging around 35 years of age, rooted in sandy limestone soils around Vittoria. The fruit is harvested by hand, destemmed but kept as intact berries and fermented spontaneously in concrete with very gentle extraction. Long ageing in large Slavonian oak softens the grape’s natural structure without adding overt wood character. The resulting wine is distinctly Sicilian but far from heavy: dark berries, herbs, tobacco and rocky minerality are balanced by lively citrus-tinged acidity and a long, savoury finish.

Tasting Note

Critics describe an earthy, darkly floral wine with spiced blackberry, crushed stone, savoury herbs and fresh tobacco, followed by a soft, rounded palate enlivened by citrus-tinged acidity, minerals, sour cherry and a long tart finish.

Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti founded her estate in Vittoria, southeastern Sicily, in 2004 and has become one of the region's most influential contemporary winemakers. Working primarily with native varieties such as Frappato and Nero d'Avola, she combines biodynamic farming with low-intervention winemaking to produce unusually fresh, elegant and transparent expressions of Sicily.
