About this wine

Roc is sourced from very old Mencía vines on sandy and clay-slate soils in Valtuille, giving naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. Verónica ferments the grapes with indigenous yeasts – often with some whole clusters – and ages the wine in neutral barrels to refine the tannins without adding overt oak flavour. The 2022 shows a darker, more brooding Bierzo profile than Quite: black cherry and wild strawberry, dried flowers, licorice and a graphite-like minerality. It’s still graceful and medium-bodied, but with more grip and ageing potential.

Tasting Note

The Wine Advocate characterises recent vintages of Roc as a Burgundian-textured Bierzo, with fine-boned tannins, precise red and black fruits and a long, stony finish; 2022 follows in that line with a bit more warmth and generosity.

In the glass

Deep ruby with a slightly opaque core.

In the nose

Black cherry, black raspberry, dried rose, licorice and a cool, stony note.

On the palate

Focused and linear, with dark, crunchy fruit, firm but polished tannins and a long, mineral, slightly savory finish.

Verónica Ortega

Verónica Ortega, who trained with the likes of Comte Armand, Raúl Pérez and Alvaro Palacios, crafts some of Bierzo’s most refined Mencía-based wines. She focuses on old vines, often on slate and clay, and vinifies with whole clusters, neutral oak and low intervention. The wines are perfumed, spicy and mineral, with a Burgundian sense of delicacy.
