About this wine

“Stella Retica” is sourced from 50-year-old Nebbiolo vines on the rocky upper reaches of the Sassella cru, at 400–700 metres altitude. Grapes undergo an exceptionally long skin maceration in large wooden tini (around 100–120 days), followed by about 15–18 months of ageing in 50-hl botti, concrete and bottle. The wine shows a translucent garnet colour and a highly perfumed bouquet of red roses, wild strawberries, laurel, cedar and light tobacco over a strong mineral backbone. On the palate it’s medium-bodied yet intense, with silky tannins, crisp acidity and a long, savoury, spicy finish.

Tasting Note

James Suckling: floral, smoky and savoury with leesy notes, incense, stony minerality and fresh strawberries; medium-bodied with velvety tannins, crisp acidity and a juicy, lifted finish.

In the glass

Garnet with a pale, transparent rim.

In the nose

Red roses and violets, wild strawberry, cedar, laurel, light leaf-tobacco and alpine minerality.

On the palate

Supple and refined with juicy red fruit, vibrant acidity, silky tannins and a long, mineral finish.

Arpepe

Ar.Pe.Pe. is the reference producer in Valtellina, crafting Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) from steep, terraced vineyards high in the Alps. Long, gentle macerations and extended aging in large casks yield wines of delicacy, perfume and subtle power. They’re Burgundy-like in transparency, with beautiful acidity and mineral length.
