About this wine

Trascuevas Blanco 2023 is Artuke’s flagship white, sourced from over 50-year-old bush vines in Baños de Ebro, Samaniego and Ábalos on poor clay-limestone soils. The blend is 85% Viura, 10% Palomino Fino and 5% Malvasía Riojana, organically farmed and picked by hand. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and maturation split equally between concrete and 600 L French oak foudres for around 11 months give the wine both depth and remarkable purity. In the glass, it opens with citrus and white stone fruit, fennel, wild herbs and delicate floral tones, backed by subtle brioche and a strong mineral line. On the palate it is intense yet poised: medium-bodied, fresh and saline, with 13–13.1% alcohol and a low pH (around 3.12) that keeps everything razor-sharp. A modern, terroir-driven white Rioja that will shine now and age gracefully for many years.

Tasting Note

Luis Gutiérrez describes the 2023 Trascuevas Blanco as a blend of 85% Viura, 10% Palomino Fino and 5% Malvasía from three old-vine plots, fermented with native yeasts and aged in a 50/50 mix of concrete and 600 L foudres for 11 months. He highlights its very pale colour with greenish hints, moderate ripeness, and a finely floral, elegant nose without overt oak. On the palate he notes its purity, lively freshness (supported by a low pH around 3.12), balanced structure and a dry, serious finish with a distinct chalky sensation, calling it a particularly successful vintage for this cuvée.

In the glass

Pale straw with green reflections, bright and crystalline.

In the nose

Citrus zest and white stone fruit layered with fennel, wild herbs, white flowers and a fine chalky, mineral edge.

On the palate

Medium-bodied, fresh and saline, with concentrated yet precise fruit, vibrant acidity, silky texture and a long, dry finish marked by limestone-driven chalkiness.

Artuke

Artuke is a family estate in Baños de Ebro that helped define the new wave of village and single-vineyard Rioja. Working organically, often with whole clusters, they make fragrant, medium-bodied Tempranillo wines that emphasise finesse, freshness and sense of place over oak and heaviness. From the village Artuke to terroir cuvées like Paso Las Mañas, the range is consistently vibrant and precise.
