About this wine

Beaucastel’s 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a classic of the estate: a high proportion of Mourvèdre with Grenache, Syrah and the other permitted varieties, all from organically farmed old vines. The wine offers deep aromas of black cherry, plum reduction and dark berries, with notes of garrigue, licorice, leather and smoked meat. On the palate it is full-bodied and dense, with ample but ripe tannins, bright acidity and a long finish showing spice, earth and saline minerality. It’s reminiscent of 2007/2009 in its generosity, yet with enough structure for decades.

Tasting Note

Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski, 95 pts): describes dark-fruited, plummy and cola-scented aromatics, a rich, full-bodied palate with ample concentration and tannin, and a long, dusty finish with hints of licorice that bode well for long ageing.

In the glass

Opaque, saturated ruby-purple.

In the nose

Black cherry, plum, blackberry liqueur, garrigue herbs, licorice, spice and a touch of leather.

On the palate

Full-bodied, dense and savory, with rich dark fruit, firm but ripe tannins, lively acidity and a very long, spicy, earthy finish

Chateau de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel is a legendary estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, famous for using all thirteen permitted grape varieties and a high proportion of Mourvèdre. Organic and biodynamic farming, whole-cluster fermentations and large foudres produce wines that are powerful yet remarkably balanced and age-worthy. The style combines southern warmth with savoury complexity and distinctive garrigue notes.
