About this wine

Côte de Léchet is one of Bernard Defaix’s flagship premiers crus, from old vines on the left bank of the Serein where Kimmeridgian limestone outcrops give intense minerality. In 2023 the wine shows concentrated citrus and poached pear fruit, nuanced by hints of shellfish, chalk and a touch of well-judged oak. Texture is a key feature here: the mid-palate is full and silky, yet the line of acidity and saline, stony grip keep everything taut and vertical. It’s a premier cru built for the table and for cellaring, ideal with scallops, rich fish dishes or creamy poultry. Expect peak drinking over the next decade.

Tasting Note

Burghound highlights ripe citrus and pear with touches of confit lemon and “wet stone”, noting a beautifully textured palate with excellent volume, evident power and a long, mineral-saturated finish (90–93 points, “top quality/price”).

In the glass

Bright straw-yellow with green flashes and good viscosity.

In the nose

Layered aromas of lemon zest, ripe pear, white flowers, struck flint and a faint buttery note from élevage.

On the palate

Broad and powerful yet sharply defined, combining citrus, stone-fruit and creamy lees notes with a long, saline, gunflint-tinged finish.

Bernard Defaix

Domaine Bernard Defaix is a respected family estate in Chablis, farming primarily on the left bank with important holdings in Côte de Léchet. Practising organic viticulture and careful, low-intervention winemaking, they craft Chardonnays that marry classic Chablis tension and saline minerality with just enough texture and weight. Old-vine cuvées bring extra depth, but the overall style stays pure, precise and very gastronomic.
