About this wine

Porphyr is produced from selected Lagrein vineyards at around 250–270 metres altitude, where the vines grow on the dark volcanic porphyry soils that give the wine its name. Yields are low and the fruit is selected by hand before a slow fermentation and extended élevage in French oak. The resulting wine combines Morello cherry and blueberry with licorice, coffee, clove, black tea and dark chocolate, while the palate remains compact and concentrated with remarkably fine tannins. Despite its depth and power, Porphyr retains the precision and freshness that characterise the best wines of Alto Adige.

Tasting Note

Wine Advocate highlights the wine’s elegance, complexity, rich concentration and soft tannins, with dense blackberry fruit and spice, while the estate adds Morello cherry, blueberry, licorice, coffee, clove, black tea and dark chocolate.

In the glass

Deep, almost impenetrable ruby-red with violet reflections.

In the nose

Morello cherry, blueberry, licorice, coffee bean, vanilla, clove and black tea.

On the palate

Compact and concentrated, with juicy dark fruit, peppery spice, dark chocolate and beautifully polished, silky tannins.

Cantina Terlano

Cantina Terlano is a renowned cooperative in Alto Adige, famous for age-worthy, mineral whites from steep, Alpine vineyards. Wines like Vorberg, Monticol and Terlaner blends combine ripe fruit with cutting acidity and a distinct smoky, saline note. The cellar’s library tastings have proved these whites can evolve beautifully for decades.
