About this wine

Cappellano’s Pie Rupestris comes from old vines in the Gabutti cru of Serralunga and is vinified with a fiercely traditional, low-intervention philosophy. The 2004 vintage shows a lifted, almost Burgundian nose of red cherry, dried rose, orange peel, spice and savoury underbrush. On the palate it is fine-boned but intense, with a core of sweet red fruit carried by high acidity and chalky tannins, finishing saline, herbal and very long. The estate famously refuses to allow scores from major critics, but among Barolo insiders this is one of the most revered wines of the appellation.

Tasting Note

Common descriptors include perfumed red cherry and wild strawberry, rose petals, blood orange, sweet spice and earthy, ferrous notes, with a firm but elegant structure and a long, savoury finish.

In the glass

Light garnet, almost transparent at the rim.

In the nose

Red cherry, rose, orange peel, tea leaves and earthy spice.

On the palate

Delicate but intense, with crystalline red fruit, high acidity, fine tannin grip and a long, savoury, saline finish.

Cappellano

A cult address for traditionalists. Cappellano avoids publicity and critic scores, yet their reputation is unmatched. Long macerations, large casks, and a patient, hands-off philosophy define the estate. The wines are soulful, complex, and built on authenticity rather than fashion. They evolve slowly and reward drinkers who appreciate subtlety over flash.
