About this wine

Made entirely from the rare Caberlot grape (a natural crossing of Cabernet Franc and Merlot grown exclusively at the estate), Il Carnasciale comes from lower terraces with stony, limestone soils in the Valdarno di Sopra hills. Fermentation is conducted in stainless steel and oak vats with long maceration, followed by élevage in French oak barriques (a mix of new and used). The 2020 shows intense blackcurrant and plum fruit, herbs, graphite, pepper and a long, savoury finish. It captures the unique signature of Caberlot in a slightly more open, earlier-drinking guise than Il Caberlot.

Tasting Note

Antonio Galloni (Vinous, on recent vintages) emphasises Il Carnasciale’s aromatic complexity, dark red and black fruits, herbal notes and firm yet polished tannins, marking it as a wine for both contemplation and the cellar.

In the glass

Very deep ruby with almost inky core.

In the nose

Blackcurrant, plum and black cherry with wild herbs, graphite, tobacco and a touch of pepper.

On the palate

Concentrated, vertical and savoury, with tight but refined tannins and a persistent mineral, slightly saline finish.

Podere Il Carnasciale

Podere Il Carnasciale is a cult Tuscan estate dedicated almost entirely to Caberlot, a rare local crossing of Cabernet and Merlot. Tiny production, meticulous vineyard work and long aging yield intensely concentrated yet remarkably refined wines. These are powerful, deeply structured bottles with dark fruit, spice and exceptional longevity.
