About this wine

Graci’s Barbabecchi (often labelled “Quota 1000 Barbabecchi”) comes from ancient, ungrafted Nerello Mascalese vines rooted in ash-rich soils in the Barbabecchi contrada, above the altitude permitted for Etna DOC and thus bottled as IGT Sicilia Rosso. The extreme height delivers a pale, transparent colour and a haunting aromatic profile: redcurrant and sour cherry, wild strawberry, blood orange, rose petals, herbs and a distinct smoky, iron-tinged minerality. The palate is feather-weight yet intensely flavoured, with high, crystalline acidity, ultra-fine tannins and a long, saline, mouth-watering finish that speaks clearly of Etna’s volcanic landscape. It’s a wine that behaves more like great Burgundy in texture and structure, but with a very Sicilian soul.

Tasting Note

Monica Larner for The Wine Advocate, reviewing the 2015 Quota 1000 Barbabecchi, called it “just terrific” and awarded it 93+ points, highlighting its lifted aromatics and precision – a high-altitude Nerello Mascalese that combines tension and complexity with impressive ageing potential.

In the glass

Pale ruby, almost translucent

In the nose

Red berries, blood orange, rose, ash

On the palate

Light-bodied, tensile, saline, very long

Graci

A leading voice on Etna. Graci farms organically at high elevation and vinifies with restraint to let the volcano speak. Nerello Mascalese shows fine tannins, red-fruited precision, and mineral grip; Carricante brings tension and salinity. The style is pure, linear, and vibrant. Etna wine in its most authentic form.

Vinification

Nerello Mascalese from very old vines at ~1,000 m is fermented with native yeasts (traditionally in large wooden vats) and aged in large neutral oak and/or concrete, allowing lengthy élevage without masking the volcanic character.
