About this wine

Clos du Roy is one of the great climats of Marsannay, and Laurent Fournier is widely regarded as one of its best interpreters. From organically farmed Pinot Noir on marl and limestone, the 2023 Clos du Roy Rouge offers aromas of black cherry, plum and dark berries, along with hints of violet, spice and earth. The palate is medium-plus in body with firm but polished tannins and a saline mineral line, giving both immediate pleasure and clear potential to age 5–10 years. It’s a wine that can comfortably sit alongside many Nuits-Saint-Georges or Gevrey village bottlings in blind tastings.

Tasting Note

Critics describe Clos du Roy as offering dark-fruit intensity, fine structure and notable length, marking it as one of the domaine’s most ageworthy Marsannay reds.

In the glass

Medium-deep ruby with garnet reflections.

In the nose

Black cherry and blackberry with violet, subtle spice and a chalky, ferrous undertone.

On the palate

Concentrated yet refined, with juicy dark fruit, firm tannins and a savoury, mineral-driven finish.

Jean Fournier

Based in Marsannay, Domaine Jean Fournier is one of the key names behind the appellation’s rising reputation. The estate is organically certified and often works with a light touch in the cellar to highlight juicy, red-fruited Pinot and vibrant Aligoté. Across the range – from Bourgogne to top Marsannay lieux-dits – the wines combine freshness, structure and a distinctly savoury, terroir-led profile.
