About this wine

This cuvée comes from old vineyards around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, on the right bank of the Ebro, planted predominantly with Tempranillo and farmed organically. As with the Labastida wine, grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with a significant proportion of whole clusters, native-yeast fermentation and gentle extraction. Ageing is in seasoned oak to avoid overt wood flavours. The 2022 combines dark cherry and blackberry fruit with liquorice, graphite, violets and subtle savoury tones, framed by firm but refined tannins and fresh acidity. It’s a serious, terroir-driven Rioja with clear address and energy.

Tasting Note

Early critic and merchant notes highlight ripe but not heavy dark fruit, floral and graphite notes, cool-climate spice and a tightly woven, mineral palate that promises excellent development in bottle.

In the glass

Medium-deep ruby with a slight purple tint.

In the nose

Black cherry, mulberry, violets, liquorice, crushed stone and a hint of smoke and savoury spice.

On the palate

Concentrated yet precise, with dark berry fruit, mineral drive, firm but fine tannins and a long, vertical, mouth-watering finish.

José Gil

José Gil is one of Rioja’s most exciting young artisan growers, based in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and working mostly old vineyards at altitude. His approach is firmly “vigneron”: single-vineyard and village wines, often with whole clusters and restrained oak, giving perfumed, finely structured Tempranillo. Named “Young Winemaker of the Year” in Tim Atkin’s Rioja report, he represents a new, terroir-first face of the region.
