About this wine

“Bruto” is a limited-production Monastrell from Juan Gil, sourced from old bush vines in Jumilla’s high, dry plateau. Yields are low and ripeness high, with fermentation in stainless steel and ageing around 12–15 months in French (and sometimes American) oak barrels. The 2020 shows dense colour and aromas of blackberry, plum, licorice and mocha, with a dusting of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate it’s full-bodied and velvety, with rich fruit, generous but well-integrated oak spice and a long, warm finish.

Tasting Note

Producer notes for Bruto: intense black fruits and balsamic notes with spice and toasted oak; mouth-filling, concentrated palate with ripe, sweet tannins and a very persistent, slightly smoky finish.

In the glass

Very deep purple-ruby.

In the nose

Blackberry, plum, licorice, balsamic notes and toasted spice.

On the palate

Full-bodied, rich and velvety with ripe black fruit, chocolatey oak, firm but ripe tannins and a warm, lingering finish.

Bodegas Juan Gil

The Gil family estate in Jumilla has become a reference for Monastrell from Spain’s southeast. Old bush vines on poor, stony soils give deeply coloured, spicy reds with ample fruit and surprising freshness. The wines offer serious concentration and value, from everyday bottlings to more ambitious cuvées.
