About this wine

Kanonkop’s Paul Sauer is a Cabernet Sauvignon–led blend (with Merlot and Cabernet Franc) from the estate’s vineyards on the Simonsberg, often regarded as South Africa’s benchmark Cape Bordeaux. The 2012 vintage, from a relatively cool, balanced year, shows refined aromas of blackcurrant, plum and red cherry alongside cedar, tobacco, pencil shavings and gentle spice. The palate is medium-plus bodied with fine, persistent tannins and fresh acidity, giving a wine that feels both serious and beautifully drinkable.

Kanonkop estate

Kanonkop is a Cape icon, famed for age-worthy Pinotage and Cabernet-based blends such as Paul Sauer. Old bush vines and traditional cellar work (including open fermenters) yield wines with depth, structure and a distinctly South African personality. They balance ripe fruit with tobacco, spice and a classic, almost Bordeaux-like frame.
