About this wine

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco 2004 is one of Spain’s benchmark white wines, a 90% Viura, 10% Malvasía blend from the historic Tondonia vineyard in Rioja Alta. After a decade of slow maturation in old American oak barrels and further long bottle ageing, the wine emerges with layers of wax, dried citrus, nuts and savoury spice over a taut, mineral spine. This is not a fruit-driven white but an oxidative, saline style that rewards patience and contemplation at the table. It is best enjoyed in large glasses at cellar temperature with rich poultry, mature cheeses or noble fish dishes.

Tasting Note

Described as a “developed white” aged 10 years in neutral American oak, with pungent aromas of mushrooms, pollen, beeswax, white pepper, kerosene and herbal notes, showing incredible depth and a very long, complex finish.

In the glass

Deep golden, almost amber, with a slight green rim and slow, glyceric legs.

In the nose

Intense notes of wax, dried citrus peel, mushroom, toasted nuts and wild herbs.

On the palate

Bone-dry, savoury and saline with great acidity, waxy texture and a very long, nutty, spicy finish.

Lopez de Heredia vina Tondonia

López de Heredia is a legendary traditionalist, known for releasing wines only when they’re ready after exceptionally long aging. Both whites and reds from Viña Tondonia and other estates show a unique, savoury complexity with oxidative, nutty and honeyed nuances alongside delicate fruit. They are uncompromising, utterly distinctive Riojas with a devoted following.
