About this wine

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Tinto 2004 is a classic Rioja blend of mainly Tempranillo with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo from the estate’s famed Tondonia vineyard. After extremely long ageing in old American oak barrels and extended bottle maturation, the wine shows a lifted bouquet of red fruits, dried flowers, leather, spice and undergrowth. The palate is silky yet structured, with fine tannins and a savoury, almost Burgundian elegance that unfolds over many hours in the glass. This is a reference-point old-school Rioja built for long cellaring and special occasions.

Tasting Note

Parker notes that the 2004 Gran Reserva “didn’t stop growing and changing in the glass,” calling it aromatic, floral, perfumed, elegant and nuanced, with textbook balance and extraordinary persistence.

In the glass

Transparent garnet with a brick rim and fine, persistent legs.

In the nose

Red berries, dried rose, leather, sweet spice, cigar box and earthy notes.

On the palate

Medium-bodied, silky and savoury, with fine dusty tannins, juicy acidity and a very long, floral, spicy finish.

Lopez de Heredia vina Tondonia

López de Heredia is a legendary traditionalist, known for releasing wines only when they’re ready after exceptionally long aging. Both whites and reds from Viña Tondonia and other estates show a unique, savoury complexity with oxidative, nutty and honeyed nuances alongside delicate fruit. They are uncompromising, utterly distinctive Riojas with a devoted following.
