About this wine

Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2012 is crafted from 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo, sourced from vines planted in 1950 in the high-altitude La Plana vineyard on the Ygay estate. The components are fermented separately and aged 34 months in American (Tempranillo) and French (Mazuelo) barriques, then blended and rested a further 20 months in concrete before bottling and extensive bottle ageing. The result is a wine of great aromatic complexity – dried flowers, sweet berry fruit, orange zest, iron and savoury spice – wrapped around ultra-fine tannins and an endless, polished finish. It is one of the modern legends of Rioja and will age effortlessly for decades.

Tasting Note

Suckling praises the wine’s dried flowers, mushroom, iron, sweet berry and grilled orange notes, with very elegant tannins that “melt in the mouth” and a seemingly endless, harmonious finish.

In the glass

Deep ruby with slight garnet highlights and excellent concentration.

In the nose

Black cherry and plum, dried flowers, iron, cedar, tobacco, grilled orange and exotic spice.

On the palate

Full-bodied yet incredibly refined, with velvety tannins, layered dark fruit, savoury complexity and a very long, balanced finish.

Marques de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta is one of Rioja’s historic estates, combining classic sensibilities with a more structured, contemporary feel. From the iconic Castillo Ygay to modern cuvées like Dalmau, the wines showcase fine oak integration, ripe fruit and excellent balance. The estate has become a benchmark for Rioja that bridges tradition and modernity.
