About this wine

From Montrose’s deep gravel and clay overlooking the Gironde, the 2009 is a towering Left Bank classic. Dense blackcurrant, blueberry and plum fruit are framed by graphite, cedar, tobacco and a saline, ferrous edge typical of Saint-Estèphe. The tannins are abundant but ultra-fine, and the acidity gives lift to what might otherwise be an overwhelming amount of power. This is built for very long ageing but already shows breathtaking complexity and length.

Tasting Note

Wine Advocate calls 2009 Montrose a perfect wine, praising its explosive black fruit, crushed stone and floral aromatics, massive yet seamless structure and a finish that seems to go on for minutes.

Opaque ruby-purple, deeply stained rim.

In the nose

Blackcurrant, blueberry, graphite, cigar box, crushed rock, violets.

On the palate

Full-bodied, powerful, tightly knit tannins, great freshness and a monumental, savoury, cassis-driven finish.

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is a Second Growth that often performs at First Growth level, producing some of the most profound and long-lived wines of Saint-Estèphe. Its deep gravel and clay soils close to the Gironde give Cabernet-dominant wines that are dark, powerful and intensely structured. In recent decades, precision in both vineyard and cellar has pushed Montrose firmly into the elite of Bordeaux.
