About this wine

Grotte Alte takes its name from the limestone ridges on which Vittoria stands and represents the most ageworthy expression in Arianna Occhipinti’s range. Equal parts Frappato and Nero d’Avola are grown biodynamically on brown sands over calcareous rock, combining the aromatic lift of Frappato with the deeper structure of Nero d’Avola. Natural fermentation in concrete is followed by an exceptionally long élevage in large French oak, giving the wine time to develop complexity without sacrificing freshness. Red berries, wild herbs and spice lead into a savoury, saline palate with balanced tannins and impressive persistence.

Tasting Note

James Suckling describes an austere, restrained profile led by cinnamon, wild strawberry and peony, while merchant references emphasize ripe red fruit, spice, Mediterranean herbs, balanced tannins and a savoury persistent finish.

Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti founded her estate in Vittoria, southeastern Sicily, in 2004 and has become one of the region's most influential contemporary winemakers. Working primarily with native varieties such as Frappato and Nero d'Avola, she combines biodynamic farming with low-intervention winemaking to produce unusually fresh, elegant and transparent expressions of Sicily.
