About this wine

Il Frappato comes from biodynamically farmed vines on calcareous, sub-Apennine sandy soils around Vittoria. Fermentation takes place naturally in concrete with extended skin contact, followed by a long period of maturation in concrete that preserves the wine’s aromatic purity and lightness of touch. The result captures everything that makes Frappato distinctive: wild strawberry and cherry, floral perfume, Mediterranean herbs, orange peel and delicate spice, supported by fresh acidity rather than extraction. It is an expressive and highly gastronomic Sicilian red that combines delicacy with remarkable persistence.

Tasting Note

James Suckling highlights wild strawberry, sliced orange, cardamom and pepper, while specialist merchant notes add redcurrant, plum, myrtle, tobacco and sweet spice to a deep, energetic and persistent palate.

In the glass

Bright ruby-red.

In the nose

Wild strawberry, cherry, redcurrant, orange peel, Mediterranean herbs, cardamom and pepper.

On the palate

Fresh and vibrant yet surprisingly deep, with juicy red fruit, savoury herbs, fine tannins and a long, reactive finish.

Occhipinti

Arianna Occhipinti founded her estate in Vittoria, southeastern Sicily, in 2004 and has become one of the region's most influential contemporary winemakers. Working primarily with native varieties such as Frappato and Nero d'Avola, she combines biodynamic farming with low-intervention winemaking to produce unusually fresh, elegant and transparent expressions of Sicily.
