About this wine

Made by José Luis Mateo in Monterrei, Alanda Tinto 2018 blends roughly 40% Mencía with Bastardo (Merenzao) and Garnacha Tintorera from vineyards on slate, sand and clay. The wine ferments with one-third whole clusters in stainless steel and concrete, then matures for about 15 months in a mix of barrique, stainless steel and concrete before another year in stainless. The result is a medium-bodied, refined red that marries ripe red fruit with floral, herbal and spicy nuances. It’s elegant rather than powerful, with the sort of detail and energy that has made Muradella wines cult objects.

Tasting Note

Luis Gutiérrez (WA) calls 2018 Alanda Tinto “characterful”, with rich and expressive aromas of red fruits and flowers, a nervy, fresh palate, silky tannins and a persistent, savoury finish.

In the glass

Bright cherry red with violet flashes.

In the nose

Ripe red cherry and raspberry, violets, herbs and a hint of spice and earth.

On the palate

Medium- to full-bodied but very fresh, with juicy red fruit, silky tannins and a long, savoury, mineral finish.

Quinta da Muradella

Quinta da Muradella is José Luis Mateo’s soulful project in Monterrei, working almost forgotten Galician varieties on varied granite and slate soils. Organic farming and very gentle winemaking produce reds and whites that are subtle, savoury and complex, often with modest alcohol and great aging potential. It’s a cult name among lovers of Atlantic, terroir-driven wines.
