About this wine

As Sortes is sourced from six old-vine parcels of Godello (many 40–90+ years old) on poor, granitic soils at altitude, giving naturally tiny yields and tremendous concentration. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in large French barrels and foudres and aged on the lees, usually for 8+ months, with minimal bâtonnage. The 2023 vintage combines ripe citrus and stone fruit with gunflint, iodine, fennel and smoke, wrapped around a powerful, chiselled core. It’s one of Spain’s benchmark whites for cellaring.

Tasting Note

WA describes recent As Sortes releases as concentrated but almost weightless, with compact fruit, electric acidity and a strong granitic and saline signature; 2023 is praised for its precision and depth, earning one of the highest scores for the cuvée.

In the glass

Bright gold-straw with a slightly viscous look.

In the nose

Lemon curd, ripe pear, chamomile, smoke, flint and a subtle nutty lees note.

On the palate

Concentrated and textural yet incredibly focused, with layered citrus and stone fruit, savoury depth and a very long, salty, granitic finish.

Rafael Palacios

Rafael Palacios, brother of Álvaro, is the master of Godello in Valdeorras. Working steep, terraced vineyards on decomposed granite, he crafts whites that are taut, mineral and age-worthy, with citrus, fennel and a subtle waxy texture. As Sortes and his single-parcel wines are benchmarks for serious Atlantic Spain whites.
