About this wine

Louro is sourced from organically farmed Godello vines in the Val do Bibei, many of them 25–40 years old, planted on granitic and schistous terraces at altitude. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, Louro usually matures on the lees in large 3,000 L foudres and barrels, gaining breadth and savoury complexity while retaining its crystalline line of acidity. The 2024 shows ripe citrus and stone fruit, fennel, smoke and crushed rock. It is the reference point for modern, terroir-driven Valdeorras whites.

Tasting Note

The Wine Advocate has described recent Lurous as combining ripeness and volume with a strong granitic imprint and saline finish; 2024 follows suit, with particular clarity and precision in its fruit.

In the glass

Medium straw with greenish highlights.

In the nose

Lemon oil, ripe peach, fennel seed and a smoky, flinty mineral streak.

On the palate

Silky and mid-weight, with ripe citrus and stone fruit, savoury lees texture and a long, salty, granitic finish.

Rafael Palacios

Rafael Palacios, brother of Álvaro, is the master of Godello in Valdeorras. Working steep, terraced vineyards on decomposed granite, he crafts whites that are taut, mineral and age-worthy, with citrus, fennel and a subtle waxy texture. As Sortes and his single-parcel wines are benchmarks for serious Atlantic Spain whites.
