About this wine

Ridolfi’s 2019 Brunello di Montalcino comes from organically farmed vineyards on the north-east side of the hill at around 300 metres, with clay-rich soils full of marine fossils that lend tension and minerality to the wine. The 2019 vintage shows ripe but classical Sangiovese character: dark cherry and blackberry framed by violet, cloves, cedar and a subtle balsamic edge. Long maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks give polished tannins and savoury depth without overt woodiness. This is a structured yet elegant Brunello that drinks beautifully after a short decant, but has the balance to evolve gracefully over the next decade and beyond.

Tasting Note

James Suckling describes this as a compact, savoury Brunello with dark fruit, ground clove and dried-rose notes, medium body, firm tannins and fresh acidity, finishing with cedar and cured-meat nuances.

In the glass

Medium-deep ruby with garnet highlights at the rim.

In the nose

Dark cherry, blackberry, dried rose, clove, a touch of balsamic and cedar.

On the palate

Medium-plus bodied, savoury and focused, with juicy red-black fruit, fine chalky tannins and a long, fresh, slightly saline finish.

Ridolfi

Ridolfi is an up-and-coming estate in Montalcino, making detailed, vibrant expressions of Sangiovese from high-altitude vineyards. Their Brunello and single-vine bottlings blend ripe Tuscan fruit with freshness, refined tannins and judicious oak. The style leans toward elegance and clarity rather than sheer power.
