About this wine

The Riserva “Mercatale” is produced from the estate’s oldest Sangiovese vines in the Mercatali area, on clay and fossil-rich soils at around 300 metres. After an extended maceration and long ageing in large Slavonian oak, the 2017 shows a dense core of red and black cherry interwoven with notes of dried flowers, tobacco, sweet spices and sandalwood. The palate is full-bodied and mouth-filling, with richly textured but velvety tannins and a long, savoury, balsamic-tinged finish. This is a serious Brunello Riserva suited to long cellaring and special occasions.

Tasting Note

Wine Enthusiast notes aromas of menthol, oak, coconut and roasted coffee bean, with flavours of dried black cherry, vanilla and licorice framed by polished, velvety tannins.

In the glass

Deep ruby-garnet with significant concentration and a lightly brickish rim.

In the nose

Intense red and black cherry, dried plum, menthol, espresso, sweet spice and well-integrated oak.

On the palate

Full-bodied and powerful, with layered dark fruit, savoury spice, fine but assertive tannins and a long, warming, balsamic finish.

Ridolfi

Ridolfi is an up-and-coming estate in Montalcino, making detailed, vibrant expressions of Sangiovese from high-altitude vineyards. Their Brunello and single-vine bottlings blend ripe Tuscan fruit with freshness, refined tannins and judicious oak. The style leans toward elegance and clarity rather than sheer power.
