About this wine

Gran Reserva 890 is La Rioja Alta’s flagship, produced only in top years from mainly Tempranillo (c.95%) with small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo. The 2005 vintage spent about six years in American oak barrels made in-house, with frequent rackings, followed by extensive bottle ageing before release. It offers a medium-deep cherry colour and intensely classical aromas of dried strawberry, red cherry, leather, tobacco, spices and balsamic notes. The palate is full of nuance rather than sheer power: fine, resolved tannins, bright acidity and a very long, savoury, subtly sweet-spiced finish.

Tasting Note

James Suckling & Wine Advocate: stunning dried strawberry, stone and fresh mushroom aromas; full-bodied but tight and focused, with great depth, energy and a very long, refined finish.

In the glass

Medium-deep cherry red with some garnet at the rim.

In the nose

Dried strawberry and red cherry, tobacco, leather, spice, balsamic and forest-floor notes.

On the palate

Medium-bodied, very fine-boned and silky; delicate red fruit, savoury tobacco/leather, bright acidity and an extremely long, elegant finish.

La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta is a classic Rioja house, famed for its long-aged Reservas and Gran Reservas that epitomise traditional elegance. Extended barrel and bottle aging bring together red fruit, spice, leather and fine, silky tannins. The wines are both comforting and complex, built to age gracefully for decades.
