About this wine

Columella 2023 comes from a mosaic of old, dry-farmed parcels across Swartland, planted mainly to Syrah with six other Mediterranean varieties. The 2023 vintage avoided the heaviest Cape rains and produced beautifully balanced fruit, giving a wine that is powerful but not heavy. Expect a core of dark cherry and plum framed by graphite, garrigue herbs, exotic spice and a cool, stony backbone. It is already impressive in youth but clearly built for long ageing.

Tasting Note

Deeply scented with black cherries, fresh plums and blackberries, layered with sandalwood, sage, cloves and a touch of peach-kernel and earth. The palate is concentrated yet taut, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity and a very long, polished, mineral finish.

In the glass

Deep, vivid ruby with purple highlights.

In the nose

Dark cherry, plum, black tea, dried flowers, incense and crushed rock.

On the palate

Intense but super-fine; layered dark fruit, spice, savoury herbs and a long, saline, mineral finish.

Sadie Family

Eben Sadie’s wines helped redefine the Swartland, focusing on old vines, dry farming and field blends. His whites and reds are subtle, textural and incredibly detailed, often from forgotten varieties and marginal sites. The philosophy is low-intervention and terroir-first, producing some of the Cape’s most sought-after, nuanced bottles.
