About this wine

Único is Vega Sicilia’s icon wine, a blend dominated by Tempranillo with a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for close to a decade in a mix of barrels and large vats before release. The 2008 shows deep blackberries, blackcurrant and plum alongside notes of charred wood, tobacco, toast, dried flowers and spices. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, compact and brooding at first, then opens to reveal fine, persistent tannins, savoury depth and outstanding length. This is still on a long evolutionary curve and ranks among the great modern Único vintages.

Tasting Note

James Suckling / Wine Advocate: charred bark, blackberries, tobacco, toast and dried flowers; medium-to-full body with chewy yet refined tannins, great elegance and a very long, complex finish.

In the glass

Deep ruby with hints of garnet at the rim; very dense.

In the nose

Blackberry, cassis and plum with tobacco, cedar, toast, dried flowers and savoury spice.

On the palate

Medium+ to full, concentrated and layered; juicy dark fruit, complex savoury notes, firm but super-fine tannins and a remarkably persistent, nuanced finish.

Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most legendary estate, with Único and Valbuena among the world’s great age-worthy reds. Old vines, long aging in a combination of different woods and a unique blend of Tempranillo and Bordeaux varieties create wines of immense depth and complexity. Despite their power, they are defined by elegance, balance and an almost timeless aura.
