About this wine

Cobrana 2023 comes from a mosaic of tiny plots around the village of Cobrana, planted over 90 years ago to mostly Mencía with a significant share of Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino. Farmed biodynamically and worked by hand, the vines sit on steep, cool slopes with mixed clay, sand and slate, giving both perfume and tension. The wine is vinified with a gentle, low-extraction approach and matured in neutral barrels to let the site speak. The result is an incredibly refined Bierzo: red-fruited, chalky and saline, more about elegance and length than power.

Tasting Note

Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate) describes 2023 Cobrana as an especially delicate and vertical expression, with haunting red fruit, flowers and herbs, very fine tannins and a long, chalk-inflected finish – his highest score yet for this cuvée.

In the glass

Pale, translucent ruby with a slightly bricked edge, like a Côte de Nuits.

In the nose

High-toned red berries, rose petals, wild herbs and a subtle chalk-dust minerality.

On the palate

Feather-light yet intense, with pure red fruit, mouth-coating but ultra-fine tannins and a long, salty, stony finish.

Verónica Ortega

Verónica Ortega, who trained with the likes of Comte Armand, Raúl Pérez and Alvaro Palacios, crafts some of Bierzo’s most refined Mencía-based wines. She focuses on old vines, often on slate and clay, and vinifies with whole clusters, neutral oak and low intervention. The wines are perfumed, spicy and mineral, with a Burgundian sense of delicacy.
