About this wine

After retiring her cult white “CAL”, Verónica created La Llorona as its spiritual successor, named after the mythic weeping woman and illustrated on the label. The wine is 100% Godello from 35-year-old vines at around 500 m altitude on sandy soils with limestone and clay, giving both breadth and tension. After a careful manual harvest, the wine ferments spontaneously and ages nine months in a mix of 500 L, 600 L and 225 L French oak, all neutral, adding texture without masking terroir. The 2024 shows a serious, gastronomic profile: citrus oils, white stone fruit, chamomile and a gentle nutty, manzanilla-like note over a long, mineral finish.

Tasting Note

The Wine Advocate highlights La Llorona as a concentrated but lifted Godello, with layered citrus and white fruit, hints of fennel and saline herbs, and a palate that’s both creamy and sharply defined, promising excellent mid-term ageing.

In the glass

Bright straw with green glints and a crystalline sheen.

In the nose

Lemon zest, ripe pear, apricot kernel, toasted sunflower seeds and a salty, chamomile edge.

On the palate

Textured and mouth-coating yet focused, with ripe citrus and stone fruit framed by chalky grip and a long, savoury, saline finish.

Verónica Ortega

Verónica Ortega, who trained with the likes of Comte Armand, Raúl Pérez and Alvaro Palacios, crafts some of Bierzo’s most refined Mencía-based wines. She focuses on old vines, often on slate and clay, and vinifies with whole clusters, neutral oak and low intervention. The wines are perfumed, spicy and mineral, with a Burgundian sense of delicacy.
