About this wine

Ximénez-Spínola in Jerez has specialised exclusively in Pedro Ximénez since 1729, working their own PX vineyards rather than buying grapes from Montilla. Licor de Brandy Battonage 40º is a house speciality: a 100% PX-grape brandy aged in old PX casks, blending the warmth and structure of brandy with the aromatic richness of sun-dried PX. The result is an amber spirit with layers of dried fig, date, coffee and spice, yet with enough freshness to avoid cloying sweetness. It’s ideal as a digestif or with dark chocolate and blue cheese.

Tasting Note

Specialist sherry and spirits writers tend to describe Battonage as powerful but elegant, with intense dried-fruit aromatics, polished oak, and a long, warming, nutty finish.

In the glass

Deep amber with slow, glyceric legs.

In the nose

Dried figs and dates, toasted nuts, toffee, coffee and sweet spice.

On the palate

Full-bodied and warming, with rich raisiny sweetness balanced by brandy grip, finishing long on nuts, cocoa and spice.

Ximénez-Spínola

Ximénez-Spínola is a singular, tiny bodega in Jerez that works almost exclusively with Pedro Ximénez. They produce everything from unfortified dry whites to complex, long-aged PX sherries and brandies, all in very small quantities. The style is artisanal and luxurious, with deep raisined fruit, spice and balanced sweetness lifted by freshness and long oxidative complexity.
