About this wine

Clos Windsbuhl is one of Zind-Humbrecht’s historic monopole-like vineyards, situated high above Hunawihr at around 350 metres and facing south to south-east. Its thin soils lie over Muschelkalk limestone rich in clay and chalky rock, slowing ripening and allowing Pinot Gris to develop exceptional aromatic complexity while retaining acidity. The domaine has produced Pinot Gris here since acquiring the vineyard in the late 1980s, and the combination of mature vines, limestone and the cool site gives the wine a distinctly refined character compared with broader, warmer-site Alsace Pinot Gris. With bottle age it develops layers of ripe orchard fruit, smoke, honey, spice and mineral complexity while retaining the structural freshness for which Windsbuhl is renowned.

Tasting Note

Mature Clos Windsbuhl Pinot Gris is characterised by concentrated orchard and exotic fruit, smoky and honeyed complexity, substantial texture and the unusually high acidity and mineral finesse associated with this limestone site.

In the glass

Deep golden yellow with mature amber highlights.

In the nose

Ripe pear, apricot, honey, smoke, dried flowers, spice and chalky mineral notes.

On the palate

Rich and concentrated yet lifted by firm acidity, with ripe orchard fruit, smoky complexity and a long, mineral-driven finish.

Zind-Humbrecht

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of Alsace’s benchmarks for intensely expressive, terroir-driven whites. Biodynamic farming, extremely low yields and late harvesting give their wines a powerful, almost baroque concentration balanced by vibrant acidity. From Clos Jebsal to their Grand Crus, they craft single-vineyard bottlings that are unapologetically characterful and built for long aging.

Vinification

Pinot Gris from the high-altitude Muschelkalk limestone of Clos Windsbuhl is naturally fermented and matured on its full lees in traditional large old oak foudres, following the domaine’s established cellar method for the site.
